Salix x 'Flame'

Salix x 'Flame' is grown in our willow beds at Lakeshore Willows for basketry.

Description

  • The rods are an orange/yellow colour that intensifies in winter
  • First year's growth is large, heavy and branched, but will grow more slender rods without side shoots in following years.
  • A little "soft" when soaked, but can be used for basketry to add some different colour. I particularly like to use the smaller, finer rods that is produced after a few years in the field.

Growth Habit

Medium to large shrub when not coppiced

Application

This variety is beautiful for colour in your garden when coppiced annually. Also good for some weaving projects.

IMPORTANT NOTE FROM LENE: I am not a horticulturist and the information provided for each willow variety is based on my observations growing and using the willows here at Lakeshore Willows. The information about growth habit is quoted from Christopher Newsholme's book: Willows, The Genus Salix.
